Rethinking Systems, Stories and Communities

Every strand of my work has grown from a single question that has followed me from neighbourhood dinner tables to boardrooms and youth projects. What does it take for young people to feel that they belong, that their future is possible, and that their lives matter in ways that are not dependent on luck? The journey has taken me from the grassroots generosity of Good in the Hood to the prevention-first approach of the Rethink Collective, the evidence and school-based prevention of Our Futures Institute, and the deeply relational model of StreetWork.
Although these initiatives appear different on the surface, they are bound by a common truth. Young people thrive when systems, communities and institutions work together rather than hoping that individual programs can carry the load. This article explores how these threads fit together, why belonging is a structural condition rather than an individual trait, and what Australia can learn from prevention science, community psychology and youth development research about the systems that allow young people to flourish.
